Deutsche Bank Championship Golf Betting Preview

Author: Matt Fargo - 29 August 2012
Round one of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is history and Nick Watney was finally able to break through for his first win of the season after posting three top tens heading into the Barclays. Watney is now atop the FedEx Cup standings but it could be short lived as winning back-to-back events in not easy on this tour. Just ask Sergio. The field has been cut to the top 100 for the second leg of the playoffs.
The Deutsche Bank Championship takes center stage from TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts on this holiday weekend event that runs from Friday to Monday. TPC Boston has been one of the easier stops in recent years and there is no reason to think it will be any different this week. The 7,214-yard, par 71 layout is fairly wide open but it is the large greens that are pretty straight forward that contribute to the low scores.
As mentioned we are down to the top 100 in the standings with the top 70 advancing to the third round of the playoffs next week at the BMW Championship. Current strong form is typically a big factor when looking for a winner and we will go along with that same logic this week although past course success and good iron play also needs to be factored in. There are no tricks here, just a course ripe for the taking.
The defending champion is Webb Simpson (+3,000) who won in a playoff over Chez Reavie to claim his second title in 2011. He was the epitome of coming in hot as he won two weeks before at the Wyndham Championship and then had a T10 at the Barclays the next week. However this year his current form is not very good as after taking a month off, he has no better than a T22 in three starts and missed the cut last week.
Tiger Woods (+1,000) is the co-favorite along with Rory McIlroy and this could be a spot where he puts the past poor weekend showings behind him. He is ranked third in the FedEx Cup Standings thanks to three wins this year. A 72-76 weekend hurt him, as did his back, last week at the Barclays but he is fine now and with a win and two runner-ups at the Deutsche Bank Championship, he knows how to play well here.
We used Dustin Johnson (+1,500) last week and although he fell short, he is playing at the top of his game right now. He has not missed a cut since the U.S. Open which came after his win at the St. Jude Classic and has two top tens including a T3 last week. He is a big hitter that won't get into trouble here and even though his last two starts here have been average, he finished T4 in 2009.
Jason Dufner (+2,000) took last week off but it did not hurt him as he is sixth in the FedEx Cup Standings and the rest can only help. He has been playing great since April with two wins, a runner-up, a T4 and two seventh place finishes. He has also had plenty of success here as well as in three starts, he has a T2, a T17 and a T31. He is ranked fourth on tour in GIR which is a big factor here.
Brandt Snedeker (+2,500) has a lot going for him this week. He is coming off a solo second last week at Bethpage which was his fifth top ten of the season. He has not won since January but this place could end the drought. His last two starts here resulted in a T3 last year and a T5 in 2010. Motivation will play a big part too as a strong week could get him a spot on the Ryder Cup team as a captain's pick.
Tim Clark (+5,000) has been high on a lot of radars lately but the odds are not showing how well he is playing. He is coming off a T10 last week which was his fourth straight finish inside the top 15. He is obviously healthy so his current form should definitely continue. His track record at the Deutsche Bank Championship is spotty but he is putting lights out which can help the cause at any course.
