Nissan Open Preview
Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, California
The tour stays in California this week, heading to yet another historic course and tournament with a lot of history. The Nissan Open is the tour's third oldest event and is considered one of the best stops of the season for a lot of players. The last seven champions of the Nissan are in the field this week and one player who has never won it is back in action, that being Tiger.
Woods has the best overall scoring average in this event over the past 10 years and is the leading money winner in that span as well but he has never hoisted the trophy. Since 1997, he has never finished lower than 20th and has two runner-up finishes to his credit. Those came in 1998 and 1999 and since then he has never finished higher than 5th. This is one that he wants and being 2-2 so far this year helps that quest.
Woods in one of five players who have 10-year scoring averages of less than 70, another being Chad Campbell. Campbell has one win to his credit at the Bob Hope this year to go along with a runner-up at the Sony in his opening event. He has slipped since then, finishing 28th and 70th in his last two tournaments. Campbell has played the Nissan four times with his best finish coming last season when he finished second to Adam Scott.
Scott was considered fortunate to grab the win last year, his only win of the 2005 season. The event lasted only 36 holes last year due to bad weather and he actually won in a playoff over Campbell on Monday. It was considered an unofficial win due to the amount of holes played. That happened to be his Nissan debut but he carries some momentum into it thanks to the victory.
Ernie Els will be making his 2006 PGA Tour debut this week following season ending knee surgery last July. He has not played in the United States since the U.S. Open last June but he has started the season very well overseas. He finished 13th in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and 2nd in the Dubai Desert Classic, losing to Woods in a playoff. Els won the Nissan in 1999 but has not played it since finishing 66th in 2000.
Mike Weir was ready to grab a possible AT&T title last week but a Sunday round of 78, easily his worst ever at Pebble Beach, dashed those dreams. Weir is a two-time winner of the Nissan, taking the trophy two straight years in 2003 and 2004. He finished 37th in last year's shortened event but that really cannot be counted. The biggest question about him is how he responds from that disaster on Sunday.
The three other players with sub-70 scoring averages are Aaron Baddeley, Charles Howell III and Nick Price, all of whom are entered this week. Baddeley has played just that, finishing no higher than 53rd in three events this year. Howell has shown promise but has yet to put four solid rounds consistently together. Price will be making his debut at the Nissan where he has three top ten finishes.
Look for Fargo's Winning golf selections each and every week this season! He brought home the green twice this season with Chad Campbell at the Bob Hope and Tiger Woods at the Buick Invitational. He narrowly missed a third winner last week with Mike Weir and Fargo goes for another big winner this week at the Nissan!
