NFL Analysis - Nick Parsons Looks At 0-2 Teams

Author: Nick Parsons - Thursday, September 20, 2007

If at the beginning of the season I told you that the Bills, Dolphins, Chiefs, Raiders and Falcons would be at 0-2 after two weeks, you would barely bat an eyelash.

But if I told you at the start of the year that the Jets, Eagles, Giants, Saints and Rams would all have suffered a pair of losses, you might declare I was crazy!

That's where these five "elite" clubs find themselves though, down 0-2 and looking for answers to turn around what was supposed to be a promising, or even a dominating year. Let's break it down:

The Jets

In Week 1 the Jets took a nose-dive, losing 38-14 (both straight-up and against the spread) to the Patriots in what has now been dubbed "Video-Gate" (or "Spygate" - Ed.) In Week 2 they managed to cover the spread, but lost a tough one on the road in Baltimore, 20-13. In a tough match-up vs. Miami in Week 3, who typically plays the Jets very well, being down 0-3 heading into Week 4 could be a reality.

The Eagles

It's hard to say which of these team's performance, or lack thereof, has been the most surprising, but you could certainly make a strong case that it's been the Eagles. Philly has lost both games SU and ATS; Week 1 they lost in Green Bay, 16-13, and in Week 2 they blew it at home to the Redskins on Monday night, 20-12. The Eagles next play Detroit, who would love to kick this team when they are down, and then the Giants, who could themselves be sitting at 0-3 going into their Week 4 tilt with the Eagles.

The Giants

The Giants are really struggling, and this time it has nothing to do with Eli Manning. Manning has been the lone bright spot on this team so far. New York lost to Dallas in Week 1 in a shoot-out, 45-35, and then a heartbreaker at home to the resurgent Pack, 35-13 in Week 2. In Week 3 they play the 2-0 Red Skins and then the Eagles in Week 4. I'm sure Coughlin will be shown the door if they are winless after four weeks.

The 'aints

Who saw this one coming? Not all the so-called professional TV analysts across the country who all but gave New Orleans a free ride into the playoffs. This is another team really struggling, both 0-2 SU and ATS, losing to the Colts on opening night, and a shocker in Tampa Bay in Week 2. It's hard to say exactly what's wrong with the Saints; Brees has struggled, but both the Colts and Bucs effectively stuffed New Orleans supposed powerful running game. The Saints next three games are against the Titans, Panthers and Seahawks; if they don't turn things around immediately, a 0-5 start could be a reality. From worst, to first, to worst?

The Rams

At the beginning of the season I went on record saying that the Over 7 1/2 total wins on this team would be a wise wager; of course I didn't expect them to lose Orlando Pace for the season when I said so. While I still believe the Rams can turn their season around, they definitely aren't making it easy on themselves. In Week 1 they fell to Carolina 27-13 at home; they followed that up by losing 17-16 to division rival San Francisco in Week 2. The next five weeks are the hardest part of their schedule and will make or break the Rams '07/'08 season; Tampa Bay, Dallas, Arizona, Baltimore and Seattle!
