The Perils Of Betting NBA Totals

Author: MasterBets - Wednesday, November 02, 2005

There have been a lot of bad beats in the history of sports betting, but on the first night of the NBA season? Why, there ought to be a law!

Many shrewd sports bettors saw a soft line for one of the first games of the season when the Mavericks played at the Suns. The total points for the Over / Under was set high at 211.5, but as everyone who knows about the NBA knew, the Suns were without their top scorer and the Mavs are now all about defense. A total of 200 looked high, and the Under was bet with confidence.

With seconds to go the bet looked like a brilliant play. The game had produced only 180 combined points, with time all but done. Unfortunately, both teams had 90 and the game went into OT. From there, the game went into double OT, and only at that point did they finally manage to score more than 212 total points. The game finished on 219, a bad beat if ever there was one for those who bet the Under.
