Pick up any newspaper and you'll quickly read that Notre Dame doesn't own the speed or talent to trade punches with a heavyweight like LSU. That may be true. But, the Fighting Irish bring a lot of heart and emotion to the table and they're going to give the Bayou Bengals all they can handle and more.
According to my college football database, bowl teams coming off a straight up loss of 10 points or more are a respectable 23-13 ATS provided they won their previous two games before that blemish by double-digits. If our bowler is playing at home or a neutral site and matched up against a foe that enters off a straight up win, this system zips to an awesome 20-6 ATS! Notre Dame fits this situation perfectly.
There is another system that goes against LSU here too. Since 1980, college bowl favorites that enter off a straight up road win are a soft 21-33 ATS provided they are matched up against an opponent that enters off a straight up loss. If our piece of chalk is off back-to-back straight up victories, this system dips to an ugly 12-28 ATS including 8-28 ATS provided our "play against" team won by three points or more last. LSU is locked into this woeful situation.
Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis is sick and tired about hearing how the Irish aren't "ready" to defeat a team as strong as LSU. In the Sugar Bowl with a national audience watching, the Dame will grab the respect it craves the old-fashioned way - THEY'LL EARN IT. Take Notre Dame. Thank you and best of luck, Tom Stryker.
