College Football Pick

Fargo's **Friday Night Lights **2** Kansas/USF** - 9/12/2008 8:00:00 PM

  • Sport: College Football
  • Pick Selection: South Florida Bulls -3 -110

  • Kansas Jayhawks at South Florida Bulls 8:00 PM ET

    South Florida Bulls -3 -110

**Friday Night Lights - Kansas/USF Side** A higher ranked team from a higher ranked conference is getting points in this matchup and it is no surprise that the public is lining up behind the Jayhawks. Kansas has looked solid but take a look at the competition it has played. The schedule is currently ranked 164th in the nation as games against Florida International and Louisiana Tech won?t exactly account for much. You see that South Florida has played Tennessee-Martin but did you see the result? It was a 49-point win and a 520-97 advantage in yards.

The scoreboard showed a seven-point South Florida overtime win last week but the game itself tells a different story. South Florida outgained UCF 504-226 and looked like it had the game in hand until the Knights rallied late. The Bulls were looking to run the clock out up by two scores but tossed an interception which Central Florida turned into a touchdown four plays later. The Knights forced a three and out and then tied the game with 1:40 remaining. One play turned the game around but a 278-yard edge doesn?t lie.

So in total the Bulls have outyarded their opponents by 701 yards and one of those games came on the road. It has been complete domination on both sides of he ball and that does not bode well for a Kansas team that is one-dimensional on offense. Quarterback Todd Reesing has accounted for 72 percent of the Jayhawks? offensive production and the running game has lagged behind, averaging only 3.7 ypc. Florida International and Louisiana Tech, defenses with less speed and talent all over the field, have held.

Kansas averaged 4.8 yards per carry last season, a yard more than this year, and the Jayhawks were able to run just about whenever they chose to. The loss of Brandon McAnderson, the third leading rusher in the Big XII last season, is already starting to show. At South Florida on Friday night, the Jayhawks will be facing a defense that intends to stop Kansas from running and passing. The Bulls are giving up an average of 67.5 ypg rushing and 94 ypg passing.

While Reesing gets the press, South Florida has a quarterback of its own on Matt Grothe. Amid death threats received during the week, he rushed for 54 yards, threw for 346 yards and scored three touchdowns against the Knights. Kansas has a stout defense but the secondary took another hit as defensive back Kendrick Harper was hurt last game and will be out Friday. Redshirt Freshman Isiah Barfield will start in Harper's place. The Bulls will have too much on both sides ands they cover this small number. Play South Florida Bulls 2 Units
