Sport: MLBPick Selection: Colorado Rockies
At 9:05pm our National League Game of the Month is the Colorado Rockies over the New York Mets. It?s unclear what the future holds for recently-acquired Mets lefthander Oliver Perez. Not long ago he was considered one of the best young lefthanders in baseball, but with his second awful season in a row coming to a close, one has to wonder how much longer Perez will be a starter in the Majors. The Mets obtained him for some insurance with starters Pedro Martinez, Orlando Hernandez, and Brian Bannister having injury problems (this was before the Mets knew that Tom Glavine would also go down). But with Martinez, Bannister, and Glavine all slated to come back in relatively short order, this could be one of Perez?s last starts for a while. Although it's possible that with a big lead in the division the Mets may opt to continue to give Perez work and not rush some of the others back lest they risk not having one of them for the playoffs. In any event, with a 2-10 record and 6.78 ERA, Perez is a risky starter at best. Tonight, the Rockies have perhaps their best chance to beat the Mets, something they have not been able to do all year, as they send their very reliable lefty Jeff Francis to the mound. The Rockies have won 15 of Francis? 25 starts and in this matchup of southpaws, Colorado should have an offensive advantage as they hit 10 points higher against lefties than the Mets (.272 vs. .262). The clincher is that Perez' teams (the Pirates & Mets) are 0-7 combined in his road starts this season. Take the Rockies. As always, good luck?Al McMordie. And don't miss my NFL Winner tonight. Also, looking ahead, I may have my MLB Game of the Year tomorrow, so be sure to stop by this web site.
