Sport: MLBPick Selection: Diamondbacks
At 10:05pm our selection is on the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Chicago Cubs. Sentiment may be on the side of the Cubs and there may even be quite a few Cubbie faithful in the stands on Wednesday night, but the fact is that you'd be hard-pressed to find a more lopsided series than this one in the games played in Chase Field in the Arizona desert. In the last 30 games played there, the D-Backs are a remarkable 23-7 vs. Chicago, and most of those did not feature a reigning Cy Young winner like tonight's Arizona starter, Brandon Webb. And were it not for San Diego's Jake Peavy, Webb might very well have won the award again this season, but it looks like Peavy, who's leading the league in all three major categories (wins, ERA, and strikeouts) will take it. Webb's been brilliant down the stretch, going 10-2, and in this stretch, he's allowed just 3 home runs in 92 2/3 innings. Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano has also been very good this year, but you have to go back almost 2 1/2 years to find the last time he's faced Arizona, and back almost another two years before that to find the last time he's pitched well against them. In his career, he's 1-2 with a 4.88 ERA vs. the Diamondbacks. Arizona has been completely dominating at home, taking nine of the last eleven games played there, which is one of the big reasons why it won the division, as it actually has a losing record on the road this year. Take the D-Backs. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
