Sport: MLBPick Selection: mets/diamondbacks 'under'
At 4:40 pm our complimentary selection is on the New York Mets and the Arizona Diamondbacks 'under' the total. With a record of 16-16, the Arizona Diamondbacks are hanging in there and in a wide-open National League West, they may be able to surprise some folks by the time all is said and done. One big reason has been their pitching, especially that of their bullpen. So far this season, the D-Backs relievers have an ERA of 2.69, which is one of the best in the NL. Speaking of best in the NL, the Mets have the best ERA in the NL overall, and that certainly is not surprising. And it could get even worse for opposing teams when they get Pedro Martinez back. Right now they are keeping their team ERA low even with a bit of a patchwork list of starters which includes tonight's pitcher, righthander Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey's 0-3 record is not all his own fault, as the Mets really haven't supported him at the plate when he's been out there. In fact, New York has only scored a total of 13 runs in Pelfrey's 4 starts which is just slightly more than 3 runs per start and it would be hard for any pitcher to have a decent record with that kind of run support. Unfortunately, it may not get any easier today for Pelfrey and the Mets as they have to face one of the biggest workhorses of any rotation in baseball, righty Livan Hernandez. Hernandez has been outstanding this season and he's had 5 quality starts in 6 total outings so far. The under is 6-2 in New York's last 8 games as the favorite, and 8-2-1 in Arizona's last 11 games as an underdog. Take the 'under'. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
