Seattle Mariners (Washburn) +140
The Seattle pitching has been very below average in the beginning of this current roadtrip but Sunday it gets a good arm to the hill. Even with the loss Saturday, the Mariners are playing well, having won eight of their last 11 games including a modest four of six on the road. Seattle has also won four of its last six against the Yankees with both of those victories from New York coming from Chien-Ming Wang who was sensational on Saturday as Seattle could get nothing going.
That should change on Sunday as the Mariners go up against Darrell Rasner who was recalled from AAA to make this start. He pitched pretty well in New York in his first stint at the beginning of the year but a gap of 17 days between facing Major League hitting will be difficult. He was hammered by the Orioles before pitching well against Cleveland in his two home starts where hew has a 6.23 ERA in 8.2 innings. He is averaging only 78.3 pitches per putting meaning the suspect bullpen will play a part.
Jarrod Washburn has had some of the best success against the Yankees an opposing pitching can have. Of every team he has started against more than once, his career ERA of 2.69 against New York is the lowest and he has started against the Yankees eight times. Of those eight outings, only one has not been a quality start. That ERA drops to 2.14 in three starts at Yankee Stadium. He is in fine form to keep it going as he has a 2.88 ERA on the season and has not allowed a run on the road.
The Yankees are just 2-4 this season against left-handed starters despite hitting the ball well against southpaws. They have also struggled against top tier hurlers, going 5-16 in their last 21 games against a pitcher with a WHIP of 1.15 or less. While this one is rather meaningless, it is interesting to note that New York has lost its last eight Sunday games. Seattle has responded well after a bad offensive performance as it is 11-4 in its last 15 games following a game where the offense managed two runs or less. Play Seattle Mariners 2.5 Units
