Sport: MLBPick Selection: UNDER
I'm playing on the Pirates and Giants to finish UNDER the total. The Pirates have been a profitable 'over' team this season. That may be starting to change though as they've seen two of their last three games stay below the total, including yesterday's low-scoring (3-1) affair. With Maholm squaring off against Cain, I expect their new 'trend' of playing low-scoring games to continue.
While he has just one win to show for it, Cain has been terrific his last few starts, posting a 1.40 ERA and 1.086 WHIP. Last time out, he went into Philly (a tough place to pitch) and held the Phillies to just three hits and two runs through seven innings, recording eight strikeouts to just one walk. In his previous start, he blanked Colorado for 5 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits. The time before that, he allowed just five hits and one run through seven complete innings at San Diego. Those three games all went below the number, with scores of 3-2, 4-0 and 3-2.
Maholm was roughed up on the road last time out. He's been exceptional in three home starts though, going 2-0 with a miniscule 0.89 ERA and 0.935 WHIP. In more than 20 innings, he allowed only two earned runs and 12 hits. Not surprisingly, the UNDER was 3-0 in those games. The last time that Maholm faced the Giants (8/13/07) he was also matched up against Cain. All he did was toss a complete game 3-hitter, en route to a 3-1 Pirates win.
The Giants entered yesterday's game averaging just 3.1 runs per game on the road and they only scored one yesterday. That result brought the UNDER to 50-36-5 in their games against left-handed starters the past three seasons. Look for another pitcher's duel this afternoon. *annihilator
