New England Patriots at New York Giants 8:15 PM ET
New York Giants +14 -115
The Patriots are going for history so you know they will do whatever it takes to win this game and the line surely reflects that. Laying two touchdowns on the road is very overaggressive however. The Patriots have faced only two playoff teams on the road this a season, Indianapolis and Dallas. They were favored by five points in both of those and now facing their third playoff team on the road, they are laying over a touchdown more. The Giants are no Colts or Cowboys but the line adjustments are wrong.
This line has been pushed considering New York has nothing to play for. Except for the fact that it can halt history. That is a huge motivator for players, no matter if they are starters or subs. The Giants have been giving the indication this week that the starters will be in for this one. Nicked-up players who were expected to rest practiced and said they wanted to play. Coach Tom Coughlin, while leaving himself some wiggle room, said the Giants would prepare for and play the game the same as any other week.
Who have the Patriots beaten of late? Pittsburgh is the best of the bunch but that is one team that is going in the wrong direction. Since the bye week and following a win over the Bills, the other four teams New England has defeated have a combined record of 15-45. Most teams could win those games and the fact that the Patriots struggled in two of those shows some vulnerability. The margin of victory in those games was just nine ppg, none of those teams are going to the playoffs and three came at home.
The Giants will need to run the ball successfully and they proved last week they can do that if they stay committed. Recent opponents have demonstrated that the Patriots are vulnerable to a power running game. On the other side, the Giants lead the league in sacks, thanks largely to the defensive line rotation of Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, and Justin Tuck. The trio has combined for 32 sacks in 15 games and getting pressure on Tom Brady is the key. Yes it can be done. Play New York Giants 2 Units
